The student will have an understanding of the different approaches to syntax and the essential concepts of English syntax under the framework of generative grammar. More importantly, the student will learn the methods of argumentation in generative syntactic analysis. It is also hoped that the student will be able to apply the knowledge gained from this course to teaching English as a second language.
Carnie, Andrew. 2013. Syntax: A Generative Introduction (3rd edition). Oxford: Blackwell Publishing.
In this course, we will cover the first 8 chapters of Carnie (2013).
