教育目標

本課程《A few good men：權威、道德與公民權》探討權威、道德與公民權之本質及其相互依存關係，同時考察這些原則如何在不同歷史與文化脈絡中形塑各地對於「公民身分」的理解。課程將會介紹羅馬的公民義務，繼而轉向近代西方對法治與道德的理解。除了歷史研究和抽象的原則之外，課程透過案例研析林肯、喬治六世國王、希特勒、施陶芬伯格與羅斯福等等人物，以實際案例理解原則的推演和應用。學生將進一步研究君主制，共和制與現代憲制對於公民義務演變的影響。除了制度的進化之外，課程也將探討共產主義，暴政和法西斯主義對於現代體系的威脅。 “A Few Good Men” examines the interesting relationsships of authority, morality, and civil rights. Tracing the evolution of citizenship from classical Rome and Confucian China to modern governance, we analyze the powers of leaders and the dangers of tyranny. Through case studies ranging from Lincoln, FDR, JFK to Hitler, students will have to investigate how societies safeguard or undermine democracy. The course connects these historical lessons to contemporary global challenges like authoritarian backsliding. Ultimately, students will critically assess the paradox of power, grappling with the enduring question: when must a citizen obey orders, and when is it their duty to resist?
