教育目標

對於自然的好奇與探索,不僅僅幫助我們理解對於自然萬物運行背後的原理,也讓我們更加理解自己,並有助於我們進一步理解個體與群體互相影響的關係。我們對於動物行為的觀察以及研究,可以作為自然探索的最好途徑,藉由動物行為如何演化的討論,可以幫助我們理解人類行為背後總總生理、以及心理的機制。 我們時常從觀察野生動物中得到關於環境如何形塑行為的啟發:從螞蟻的合作行為,蜜蜂的舞蹈,到海豚及蝙蝠的回聲定位而理解動物是如何溝通。我們也將討論基因與行為是如何和環境產生互動,例如小鵝印痕行為、寒帶動物的生理時鐘,以及動物為了食物的取得、與躲避天敵,如何發展出最有效率、最不耗能的策略,我們也會討論性擇對動物行為的的影響,並且從動物的繁殖競爭延伸思考人類的性、繁殖、以及育幼行為如何被演化推力改變。我們也將探討大腦與動物行為背後的生理機制,以及目前神經科學在動物行為方面的研究。 Curiosity about and exploration of nature not only help us understand the principles behind how natural phenomena operate, but also deepen our understanding of ourselves. Through the exploration of nature, it will also help us understand the relationships between individuals and groups. Observing and studying animal behavior is one of the best routes for exploring nature; by discussing how animal behaviors evolved, we can better understand the physiological and psychological mechanisms underlying human behavior. We often gain insights into how the environment shapes behavior from observing wild animals: from ants’ cooperative behaviors and bees’ dances to dolphins’ and bats’ echolocation, which reveal how animals communicate. We will also discuss how genes and behavior interact with the environment—for example, imprinting behavior of the goose, the circadian physiology of polar animals, and how animals develop the most efficient, least energy-consuming strategies for obtaining food and avoiding predators. We will examine the effects of sexual selection on animal behavior and, by considering reproductive competition in animals, extend our thinking to how human sexual, reproductive, and parental behaviors have been shaped by evolutionary pressures. We will also explore the brain and the physiological mechanisms behind animal behavior, as well as current neuroscience research on animal behavior.
