|---|---|---|
| 4 response papers | 20 | Students are required to submit four short response papers over the course of the semester. These papers should demonstrate close engagement with the assigned readings or screenings and reflect the student’s ability to summarize key ideas, raise critical questions, and articulate informed personal responses. |
| Class Participation and Discussion | 20 | Students are expected to come to class prepared, having completed the assigned readings, and to contribute meaningfully to class discussions. Participation will be evaluated based on the quality of contributions, attentiveness, respect for others’ viewpoints, and willingness to engage in collaborative inquiry rather than on the frequency of speaking alone. |
| Midterm Paper and In-Class Presentation | 30 | The midterm assignment consists of a short analytical paper accompanied by an in-class presentation. The paper should demonstrate the student’s ability to apply key concepts or theoretical frameworks discussed in the course to a specific text, film, or cultural issue. The presentation allows students to share their ideas with the class, practice academic oral communication, and receive feedback that may be useful for the final research project. |
| Final Research Paper and Oral Presentation (12–15 pages) | 40 | Students are expected to develop a clear research question, construct a well-organized argument, and incorporate relevant secondary sources following appropriate academic conventions (MLA format). The accompanying oral presentation provides an opportunity to present the research findings concisely and to situate the project within the broader themes of the course. |

吳萼洲教育目標
This course examines colonial discourse and postcolonial theory in relation to literature, culture, and politics. We will trace the historical formation of postcolonial studies, from anticolonial thought to more recent concerns with globalization, diaspora, settler colonialism, ecology, and indigeneity. Readings will cover major theorists and literary works that exemplify the conflicts of identity, race, gender, nationalism, and migration. Students will engage critically with concepts such as orientalism, hybridity, mimicry, subalternity, postcolonial feminism, transnationalism, world literature, and decoloniality.
