Reading is a basic course for English-major students. For the intensive reading aspect, students will follow a syllabus and read assigned articles chosen from the skills-based textbook and an on-line reading program. For the extensive reading aspect, students will be given certain authentic materials.The objective of this course is to build up reading competence by use of the following reading strategies: skimming, scanning, previewing, predicting, picturing, relating, monitoring, recalling, guessing vocabulary from context clues, recognizing word parts, main ideas vs. minor details, summarizing, outlining, examining organizational patterns, making inferences, synthesizing information, distinguishing facts from opinions, and analytical reasoning.

Guided Reading is a basic course for first-year (freshman) English major students. It is based on the idea that students become good readers by reading. The objective of this course is to build up reading competence by use of the following reading strategies: skimming, scanning, previewing, predicting, visualizing, relating, monitoring, recalling, guessing vocabulary from context clues, recognizing word parts, main ideas vs. minor details, summarizing, outlining, examining organizational patterns, making inferences, synthesizing information, distinguishing facts from opinions, and analytical reasoning.
