This task-based course provides the opportunities for you to learn the skills of sight-translation step by step. Sight Translation is a hybrid of translation and interpreting and is commonly used in business correspondences, court hearings, and simultaneous interpreting in highly technical meetings. You will need to consolidate your existing language skills to better and faster comprehend texts from different genres and to orally translate the passage in the target language accurately, coherently and fluently. You will also have the opportunity to monitor and reflect on your progress and work closely to form better understanding of your strength and weakness of language skills. At the same time, you will be expected to deepen your understanding of socio-economic conditions, cultural differences, historical developments, and current events related to your working languages (i.e. English and Chinese).

Course Objectives: 1. to enhance Chinese and English language proficiencies 2. to increase exposure and appreciation of texts from different genres 3. to broaden general knowledge of the world 4. to acquire basic skills of sight translation (e.g. reading ahead, clear articulation, rephrasing, comprehension and analysis of source text, salami technique, extracting message quickly, expressing ideas fluently and clearly without obvious signs of hesitation)

Authentic materials from online media, major newspapers and news agents, magazines and other relevant materials such as reports, interviews and documentaries will be provided by the tutor.
