This seminar focuses on contrastive linguistic analyses on Chinese and English. It aims to foster an understanding of the fundamental differences between English and Chinese languages in words, sentences, discourse, and rhetorical structure. With a special emphasis on translation, this seminar adopts a contrastive analysis approach to analyze the differences between the source texts and the translated texts. At the end of this seminar, students will be able to analyze how the two languages organize and express meanings through their respective lexical, syntactic, and stylistic devices in translation.
1. Students will recognize the relative uniqueness of English and Mandarin Chinese in terms of grammatical structure, lexicology, and discourse. 2. Students will apply contrastive skills to translation. 3. Students will detect, explain, and rectify errors in translation.
1. Handouts and materials will be provided in the Moodle system (http://moodle.thu.edu.tw). Print out handouts and bring the hardcopies to class.
2. Students are encouraged to bring an English-English dictionary for hand-on translation practices in class.
