The purpose of this course is to present piano majors with a general overview of keyboard literature from the works of J. S. Bach (1685-1750) to those of Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847). It is the goal of this course to acquaint piano majors with each composer’s music and keyboard style and the particular style characteristics of each work. After taking this course, students will hopefully be able to identify the differences between, for example, a work by Haydn from on e by Mozart. Grading for the course will depend on mid-term and final examinations as well as short quizzes that will be given at various points throughout the semester. The following list consists of the works that will be covered during the semester. Students will be expected to learn these pieces thoroughly.
