The first half of the course covers polynomials. Using linear and quadratic equations, we model solutions to various real-world problems. From this foundation, we launch an exploration of higher-order polynomials and rational functions. In the process, we define fundamental concepts (e.g., function domain, range, intercepts, and symmetry) needed to graph curves in two-dimensional coordinate space.
We begin the second half of the course with an intensive review of transcendental functions (exponential and logarithmic functions), which are used to model natural processes of growth and decay. We explore a range of applications in business and finance, including investments, depreciation, credit, and various problems in economics and the social sciences. The course ends with a review of conic sections (parabolas, hyperbolas, and ellipses), which we may encounter in Calculus.
The last two weeks of the course are reserved for student group presentations. Each group will explore a mathematical technique not covered during class.
The course will involve several MS-Excel workshops. At midterm and final exam time, students can earn extra credit by taking the Excel exams. Though the workshops are required, the exams will be optional.
