1. Read (view) film and a selection of children’s books critically using basic film analysis tools
2. Have a deeper understanding of narrative structures and types
3. Think critically and creatively about the issues in and of children’s books and films.
4. Have a general understanding of child development.
5. Have a fundamental understanding of children’s culture and the function of imagination. .
6. Write and construct a children’s picture book.
This course is a general survey of Children’s Literature and Film within certain cultural contexts, genres, and age groups. This course will also take into consideration current critical questions related to the study of Children’s Lit, Film & Culture. This is an English only class designed to give intensive practice in reading, writing, listening and speaking.
Part I: Students will examine children’s film and literature narrative varying cultural background in periods of popularity. This course includes principles of Archetypal Criticism, (such as the hero/shero cycles) Narrative Structures and Plot types. Students will also be introduced to the typical ideological assumptions at play in children’s culture and their media, specifically books, films, games and toys. Students will examine image representation and modes of production.
Part II: Students will have five ‘hands on’ projects. First, they will write and illustrate a non-fiction magazine article, write a review of one book, and produce a book reading on CD. Next, in groups, they will design and construct a board game. Finally, they will write and illustrate a children’s book as a final project. Students will be given abundant in class writing and creativity enhancing exercises. For example, writing for age groups, storyboarding, writing a story in 24 sentences, writing to word lists, and word count and language manipulation (word play) and various exercises which focus on visual representation
