課程概述

WOODWIND LITERATURE FOR MASTER STUDENTS This course is not a survey of woodwind literature, but rather an in depth study of selected literature to develop a keener sense of how to prepare works for performance. Classes will utilize all aspects of your musical studies: analysis, music history, performance practice, and performance. We will also look at various analytical techniques available to understand the music of various periods, especially contemporary music or music of the Twentieth Century. This is a two-semester course. The first concentrates on a review and clearer expose of analytical techniques used for early music through the Romantic period. The second semester will place emphasis on the Twentieth Century and beyond and will be an introduction to various analytical practices to attempt to grasp the process and interpretation of that music. If there is additional time, we will begin to explore some of the great chamber works for woodwinds. Attendance is required for all sessions. The class is extremely fast paced. If you must be absent you are expected to contact a fellow student or the instructor to be prepared for the next session. There will be some daily projects to help clarify ideas. There will also be long term projects that will determine much of your grade. They include the following: 20 annotated cards per semester of selected literature pertaining to that semester. Analytical projects and performance of the chosen works to demonstrate your ability to communicate the musical thoughts to an audience. (Works will be chosen by each student.) Program notes of various literature which may serve for the final master recital.
